Sharon Your Questions About Saving Energy Facts

Sharon asks…

What are energy saving facts?

i need some energy saving facts like if you wash at 30 degrees you could power … houses with the saved energy.
Thank i need this for a geography project

adminsta answers:

Lizzie Your Questions About Saving Energy Facts

Lizzie asks…

Does anyone know about any facts on saving electricity?

Does anybody know any facts about electricity in the home ie. How much money you could save by switching to energy saving lightbulbs etc.

Thanks

adminsta answers:

A heavy coat of dust on a light bulb can block up to half of the light.

Across America, home refrigerators use the electricity of 25 large power plants every year.

A hot water faucet that leaks one drop per second can add up to 165 gallons a month. That’s more than one person uses in two weeks.

An energy-smart clothes washer can save more water in one year than one person drinks in an entire lifetime!

When you turn on an incandescent light bulb, only 10 percent of the electricity used is turned into light. The other 90 percent is wasted as heat.

A compact fluorescent light bulb uses 75 percent less energy than a regular bulb – and it can last up to four years.

A crack as small as 1/16th of an inch around a window frame can let in as much cold air as leaving the window open three inches!

Some new refrigerators are so energy-smart they use less electricity than a light bulb!

An automatic dishwasher uses less hot water than doing dishes by hand – an average of six gallons less, or more than 2,000 gallons per year.

Every time you open the refrigerator door, up to 30 percent of the cold air can escape.

Every year, more than $13 billion worth of energy leaks from houses through small holes and cracks. That’s more than $150 per family!

Not the government, the global warming activists.

Donna Your Questions About Saving Energy Facts

Donna asks…

Did you know that old so called “energy saving” light bulbs are regarded as toxic waste?

In fact, you are advised NOT to throw old energy saving bulbs in with the rubbish. Local councils do not provide a disposal solution for these bulbs, so how do you get rid of them?

adminsta answers:

Found out about this in a news report. I’m sticking with traditional technology as long as possible!

James Your Questions About Saving Energy Facts

James asks…

How do I stop an energy saving light bulb flashing when “off”?

I have just changed to energy saving light bulbs and one of them flashes approx every 3 mins – when the light switch is off. From another answer I understand that the wiring may be a problem. How can I tell the difference between the “live wire” and the “neutral wire” and why does it only matter with new energy saving bulbs?

If the wiring is not the problem could it be something to do with the fact that I live on the top floor of an apartment block and the roof above me is a spaghetti mess of electrical wires all powering airconditioning units?

FYI – I am based in Mexico

adminsta answers:

Is the lamp made of metal. If yes has it been earthed properly. The two wires going to the bulb are in easy terms the flow and return. When the light switch is on then one wire will be live. Use a neon screw driver tester to verify this. Touch it onto one wire and if it is live when the switch is on then the bulb will light. When the switch is off then both wires should be dead. Try swapping the connections around at the switch there should only be the two. This might cure the problem. Before doing all this change the bulb. Answer from the UK.
Happy Christmas.

Sandy Your Questions About Saving Energy Facts

Sandy asks…

At higher altitudes does boilers have advantage of saving energy?

because the fact at high altitude water boils faster, steam generated will be much faster, is it true?

adminsta answers:

A boiler is a sealed container being heated to turn water into steam. Because it is sealed from outside influences the height above sea level makes very little difference to savings of energy required to do that boiling it might even be a cost more situation due to depleted oxygen levels at higher altitudes .~~

Did you know being vegan saves more energy than buying a fuel saving car?

Interesting fact.
James, how many vegans do you know?
Sly, I don’t guess i understand what you are trying to say.
Theneels, its sad when untintelligent people put their backs against the wall and act smart. I know what you are doing. I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t spread fear and lies thanks.
Paul, I am not joking. Just go back and bury your head in the sand and believe whatever helps you sleep at night.

adminsta answers:

No, I didn’t know that.

3 Facts/statistics/examples of support to prove that recycling saves energy & helps reduce global warming?

adminsta answers:

Sorry to hurt your feelings but recycling reduces landfill space but does not save energy. It takes more energy to recycle something than to make it from scratch, that’s why recycling is subsidized by tax payers. Without the tax breaks and direct subsidies it wouldn’t be feasible. I tell people who recycle plastic bottles to just use glass (which is one of the few truly recyclable items) instead. Steel recycles well but if you look at the totality (including tires, batts etc) it’s a failed idea and recycling plants are even given some breaks from the EPA because of the pollution required to carry it off!
