How can I find a “How To” site that shows me how to build a windmill for my home garden decor?

adminsta answers:

Here is one site that is selling plans to make your own windmill. The plans cost $9.95 and it is a really cute windmill. I will keep checking to see if I can find another option, maybe even free!

Nearest windmill and garden from Amsterdam?

Next Tue and Wed i’ll be spending some time in Amsterdam. I like to see the flowers but unfortunately the Kaukenhof is at the moment closed. I also like to see some Windmill.

both links provided some info about windmill and garten but i don’t know which one is the nearest (and easiest) to reach.
on Thu i’ll be going to Brussels..maybe taking a train from Amsterdam.

adminsta answers:

The Keukenhof is gorgeous in season, but of course this is limited and hence is closed now as you mentioned. This is the one you should see if you visit again. You can easily spend the entire there and it is beautiful (and I am not one for visiting gardens extensively)

Regarding your links – my German is not great and I suppose you would struggle with the Dutch, so I used the English version of your link. You can do a search actually either on Amsterdam itself or ‘Noord Holland’ which is the province where Amsterdam is located

These are the three that came up in & around Amsterdam regarding gardens
http://www.dehortus.nl/index.asp – botanical gardens (also in English)
http://www.vu.nl/nl/over-de-vu/cultuur-kunst-en-sport/hortus-botanicus/index.asp – also botanical gardens (in Dutch)

From your link – the ones that came up in Groningen, Limburg – well these are quite some distance from Amsterdam just for a day-trip. It would be more logical tostay in the area if you wanted to. The closest ones (just looking at the towns) are
Middachten – this is in Arnhem – also quite some distance though – about an hour (by car)
‘n Dijk van een Tuin – in Gameren which is about 50 mins

If you like flowers and you want close to Amsterdam then a nice alternative to a formal “garden” is the Flower market in Amsterdam – it really is lovely to see – located on the canal on fixed boats (barges)

Concerning windmills a nice place to see windmills within easy reach of Amsterdam is Zaanse Schans – one of the section regulars, Willeke, wrote all about it already which you can read here with the links she provides http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Alm7VvyF5fGkUxqpRqez2TAjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20080406071526AAacwKA

George Your Questions About Windmill Gardens

George asks…

Looking to buy garden windmill toys?

Hi, in the 70s/80s in the UK you used to be able to get garden toys/ornaments which were plastic and had a windmill which, when caught in the wind, caused a little man to do something – there was one turning a water well, one chopped wood, one held a bucking horse, one rode a bike… etc. I used to love them when I was little and have been looking all over the internet for them but cannot even find a reference to them ;-(

Hope someone can remember and even better, point me in the direction of where I could find one. We had a few but they all broke – when a strong wind took them the little man went beserk and after a few years they all used to fall to bits!!!

Here are a few sites that I found:

If none of these suit your fancy, just search garden whirligigs. There’s more!
