David asks…
how exactly does blackle save energy?
well compared to regular google it is supposed to save energy. So anyways, how does it do it. Less light? or what?
adminsta answers:
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.” Roberson et al, 2002

Steven asks…
Does unplugging appliances when going away really save energy?
I have heard that you can save on your energy bill by unplugging such things as computers, TV’s, & major appliances (no, not fridge or freezer!) if you are going to be away from home for awhile. Does anyone know if this is true, what kind of savings are we talking here? Also, would really like links to any sites that discuss such things. (Please don’t just tell me to Google it, I know that much already.) Thanks!
adminsta answers:
Yea it can save some… But not much in most houses a few kwh a month at about 7 to 11 cents a kwh so you MIGHT save a dollar a month

Lizzie asks…
Does Blackle really save energy?
I’ve heard that Blackle (a Black version of the Google search engine) saves energy because of its black screen vs. the standard white. Is Blackle really that energy efficient, or doesn’t it make a big difference.
adminsta answers:
Blackle does save energy because it takes the computer monitor less energy to display a black screen instead of a white one (just like when your computer switches to sleep mode, it take it less energy to standby rather than display whatever program you might have running). Of course, it won’t make enough of a difference for you to see on electricity bill, but over time if everyone used it, it might just save a lot. That’s good enough for me! ![]()

Sandra asks…
What are you doing to prevent climat change and save the environment?
What I’m doing:
-Using a rain barrel to collect rain from storms so I don’t wave to use any water from the hose when I water plants
-Walking or biking to many places to save energy
-Using resuable shopping bags for groceries
-Using those special flush toilets that save lost of water
-Recycling
-Using the blackle search engine instead of google to save energy
What are you doing to prevent climat change and to save the environment?
adminsta answers:
I am all for saving and recycling but I also understand the we can not control the weather. Brave soldiers need to try and do some reading at the following web site:
http://www.globalwarminghoax.com/news.php
Global Warming Hoax
Refuting the Myth of Man-made Global Warming
Arguments based on science, news, and common sense. This site is non-partisan and non-religious based. In fact we fight the new faith based religion of global warming.

Helen asks…
Does making a search on Google really use as much energy as boiling a kettle?
I was shocked to hear on the BBC news that making one search on Google uses up as much energy as boiling a kettle. I have timetables and maps but I have often opted to use the internet, usually via Google, to save time. I was not aware of the environmental damage I could be doing. If this is true, and I hope it’s not, how and why does it need so much energy?
adminsta answers:
It’s not that your computer alone doing a search burns that much energy.
It’s the total amount of power used for that short exchange of data, as they travel through the different routers and relays, in addition to your PC, and that particular Google MEGA-DATA CENTER that answered the question.
Remember, your search has to pass through Google’s Data Center firewall, security and anti-virus servers, verify the message came through clean, process the request (maybe on the same server), pass a request for the data (from the storage area network array of file servers and ultra-backed up redundant disk drives), then make the return trip back to you.
Each hop from router to router (and there are many) typically runs through a firewall, security and antivirus set of servers as well, in addition to verifying the integrity of the message. Not to mention the need for each router to record and retain that message for ten years. And guess what” that router is sitting in its own data center too, and has to do a similar process to retain your message for the Feds, so they can use to hang cyber criminals.
The message integrity may also need retransmit sometiimes, and some integrity checks require your PC to verify.
All in all, that adds up to quite a bit of power use. And you wonder why we give environmentalists so little respect or credence.
Hope that clears things up!

Mark asks…
What is a good search engine to use to save energy?
not google or anything because that wastes to much energy.
adminsta answers:
If you have a CRT go to Blackle if not just as well stay with Google.

Charles asks…
is there a moonlight version of google chrome which saves energy?
adminsta answers:
Browsers of anykind do not save power. Your computers motherboard and cpu have to be designed to switch itself off at times of non-use.
The technology is hard wired into the computer and not into the software – although it is the software that does the measuring.
Use a browser that best fits your liking. Forget going green all of a sudden.
However, sometimes some software is very cleverly designed that it may save you perhaps 1% of total power used which means nothing to the over scheme of energy efficiency.
If you really want to save energy then see if you can harness the energy from the sun. Perhaps an home solar or wind generator.

Ruth asks…
Does Blackle really help save energy?
Heard of Blackle? If not then here’s a link.
http://www.blackle.com/
It claims that by using a black screen instead of a white one, it saves energy. But wouldn’t a black screen require energy too?
I’m sort of confused. Does blackle use less energy than google, or is it just a hoax?
adminsta answers:
It depends on what type of computer screen you are using, CRT saves energy, (the big old fat ones) and LCD doesnt, however I have heard that the newest plasma ones do save with black screens.
However, regardless you should try Bellzar.com – its exactly the same as Blackle except 100% of the profits from it go to help cure cancer.
Cheers

Betty asks…
what is that website from google that is black and saves energy?
adminsta answers:
Blackle.com
