Paul asks…
Why save energy in the home?
For household and businesses, why is there such a crisis to save energy?
I see all the tips on saving energy and smog control etc. But why do we need to reduce electrical energy? What’s the big deal?
adminsta answers:
Because buildings, not cars, produce the most carbon dioxide in the U.S. They account for 38% of the nations carbon dioxide emissions, and this is mainly through electricity use. Also, our electricity is generated through a limited resources (fossil fuels), so we should spend it wisely.
Plus, Saving energy saves you money. I didn’t realize just how much until I started cutting my electricity usage and unplugging things, and I actually saw a difference in my electricity bill.

Energy saving advice, can you give me some tips on how to save some energy in my apartment ?
my fiance and I are concerned about our rising electric bill and of course we are trying to do our part for the environment as well, yes we recycle, and never ever litter, but i need some hints on how to lower our energy consumption in our home. also, is it better to leave the pc on all night or to turn it off….?
adminsta answers:
Compact flourescent bulbs will decrease your electricity bill, but they contain mercury, which is not allowed in the household waste destined for landfill, so you’ll need to take trips to the hazardous waste depot to dispose of them.
Put things like tv, vcr, dvd etc on a power bar, and shut it off when not in use – to avoid consuming ‘phantom power’. Same with pc, monitor and printer.: put it on a power bar, and switch off when not in use. Switch to inkjet instead of laser printers – laser printers have a high wattage heater inside that melts the ink onto the paper.
If your apartment space and water is not heated by natural gas, consider moving to one that is, as natural gas is much cheaper to heat with than electricity.
Electricity is rated in kilowatt-hours, and i pay about 7 cents for each kilowatt-hour. A kilowatt is 1000 watts, so if I leave 10 light bulbs on for an hour, and each bulb is 100 watts, it costs me 7 cents.
Adjust your fridge or freezer to the minimum power consumption that food safety will allow. (4 °C for fridge, i think) consult fightbac.org for more details.
Adjust your programmable thermostat for 21 °C in winter and 26°C in summer, when occupied, and have it switch off when you’re not home, or asleep (if you have enough blankets).

I’m going to give these a try? Will Repubs and Dems think about it to save money AND the planet?
I am not in business with any of these people.
adminsta answers:
Prob republicans wont they would rather depend on “gods blessings” rather than science to cope with these problems which can cost more lives than the “terrorists” (which ironically became famous since Bush come on power)
Oh and saving $$$ we are spending billions in iraq and probably giving billions to israel so they can cause more destruction

Energy/Environment Saving Tips?
I am trying to save as much money as possible for this coming holiday season, but I could use some extra help with energy saving while helping the environment at the same time. Anyone got any tips at all? Thanks in advance!
adminsta answers:
An easy win that can save a lot of energy is unplugging power vampires. A modern home may easily have 10 to 30 power vampires: television sets, cable boxes, modems, satellite receivers, VCRs, DVD players, etc. Etc.
Power vampires usually consume only a few watts each. However, consider that these devices consume power around the clock, 8,760 hours per year, and you will appreciate their impact; a recent study found that together they accounted for 5 to 20 percent of total home power consumption.

Maria asks…
global warming/energy saving tips crazy?? wat do u think?
you know when we hear all these things like turn your tv off standby and save th world and walk instead of driving and unplug your charger when not in use etc…
but yet…las vegas and china have like a billion lights on EVERY night
and yet we make a difference by turning off that tiny standby light….seriosuly? do u even believe that
adminsta answers:
No, it’s a load of rubbish. See www.withouthotair.com – the author (who got a starred first in Physics from Caltech and now teaches physics at Cambridge University, UK) shows the lunacy of this sort of thinking. It’s things like flying and driving which make a difference – neither of which was even discussed in Copenhagen.

EDIT:
Hi Paul – absolutely right, and you notice that i never said or even hinted that he wasn’t. My point was merely that the BS we get told about turning off TV’s is silly feel-good nonsense.
The guy is an AGW believer, but very smart and brutally realistic. I don’t agree with his take on AGW, but i respect his honesty and rationality. I do agree with him on building a new energy network as we need alternatives to gas and oil urgently.
