A shady general contractor can be tough to collect against. They structure the company as a shell possesing no assets, so there’s no real property to seize/lein. Unfortunately, that’s not the end of your headaches. By paying the general contractor in full before completion of work, you’re double-y screwed. Again, talk to an attorney. There are specific time limits on when a workmans lein must be filed.
