Steven Your Questions About Geothermal Heat Pump

Steven asks…

What is the CO2 emission of a geothermal heat pump with solar power?

Hi I was wondering what the CO2 emission of a geothermal heat pump would be using solar power.

adminsta answers:

Assuming you do not count the CO2 emissions that are emitted during the design, fabrication, transport and installation of the system then the CO2 emissions will be zero since there is no carbon being oxidized in the actual operation of the the system you describe.

What is the average price range for Geothermal Heat Pump?

I am looking to install a Geothermal Heat Pump. I am looking for a model that will heat liquid for Radiant Flooring, and then on the upper level I will use heat exchangers for a blower.
Did your invoice breakdown the price of installation and excavation. I am curious to see what I will be saving by excavating myself. Also, please let me know what type you have? Field, Well, or Pond?

adminsta answers:

3 times the cost of normal hvac units I have one best choice I ever made.As far as radiant flooring I don’t know.Geo thermal units are generally 400% efficient as opposed to98% for your best normal hvac units.

upgrade old fuel oil furnance with geothermal heat pump?

I have only worked with forced air ground source heat pumps. Can you use a geothermal system with hot water/baseboard heat? I dont know if the heat pump would get it warm enough?

adminsta answers:

Yes, it can be done but it takes proper design. For more info, check out http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com/geothermal.html

Betty Your Questions About Geothermal Heat Pump

Betty asks…

Electrical- What size wire and breaker for Geothermal heat pump install?

I am installing a geothermal heat pump. I have everything installed except power. I was 70% sure what to do until I started checking myself. Now I am second guessing myself.

I’d like to see what you come up with.

It’s:
a 3 ton unit
240v
26 full load amps

I appreciate the help.

adminsta answers:

National Electric Code lists wire capacity as follows: #12-20 amps, #10-30 amps, #8-40 amps #6- 55amps. Of course a wire too big won’t hurt.

Anyone in the southeast with a geothermal heat pump?

We are building a new home and considering a geothermal heat pump. I’ve read it uses 70% less power to heat, but we will use it mostly for cooling in our hot humid climate. Does humidity have an effect? I’ve also read that a hybrid system would reduce initial cost. Does anyone have any experience with these systems?

adminsta answers:

I have one at my beach house, all I can say is EXCELLENT

Thomas Your Questions About Geothermal Heat Pump

Thomas asks…

Do you know anyone who uses a geothermal heat pump for their home heating and air conditioning?

Also known as geoexchange heat pump or ground source heat pump.

How much did it cost them, and how well does it work for them? Do they ever have to supplement it with ordinary heating or air conditioning, or is it always plenty, even in the most extreme weather?

adminsta answers:

I had a geothermal unit (water to air heat pump)installed in October, 2007. I paid approx $8,000. There has not been any extreme weather here in North Carolina, but I don’t have a supplement system (except for a fireplace (winter) and fan (summer).. This unit was a replacement for water to air heat pump installed when the home was built in 1977. So I have used water to air heat pump system for 30 years and am pleased with the results. You should take advantage of the tax credit incentive! My system is GT048HZN STandard low temp Florida Heat Pump, 19EER/ 4.5 c.o.p., 4.0 ton nominal which was connected to EXISTING ductwork and water supply.
