David Your Questions About How To Conserve Energy Around The House

David asks…

How do I get my school to go green?

This summer my friend and I really got into the whole going green thing. We have recycled even more, planted a tree, hugged trees (lol), and started doing those small things around the house. I love helping out with the environment and since school is starting I want my school to go green. How can I make this idea expand and work? I have thought of putting recycling bins outside and have small bins in classes. Also maybe turining off lights to conserve energy. Is it expensive to get solar panels for the school. My middle school did it, but i honestly do not know how. If you have any ideas to help me out that would be great.

adminsta answers:

Go to the class President and President of the Student Body and get them envolved. Have an assembly and invite someone to speak on this matter (why not ask Al Gore to come speak?) Get the student body educated and then break up into groups (perhaps by class) and each group would have to submit say 10 ideas. Then have a Committee for Energy and they would compile and present the most popular ideas to the faculty. Then the students would carry it out and help by reminding each other. Once you have this part completed, contact the local newspaper and see if they want to do a story on your school and your green efforts. Good luck to you all.

Linda Your Questions About How To Conserve Energy Around The House

Linda asks…

Why did my triops die & how what can I do better for next time?

Ok, my boyfriend claims that my triops died because I was trying to keep them throughout the winter & I also don’t have a lamp that gives off enough heat (I also don’t know what kind of lamp to get to heat up my triops aquarium). They say they like room temperature around 70 degrees F. Well, my room probably dropped to around 60 degrees F while I was out of the house or possibly even lower. I turn off the heat in my room whenever I leave to conserve energy, but I am also the type of person that doesn’t like to be too warm, so sometimes I would keep the heat turned off all the time, yet I still kept a light on my trips (but I guess it doesn’t give off a lot of heat, but I think it was meant to give off light more than heat anyway). I also had a tropica fern in their tank that they liked to munch on a lot. The fern came snail free, but could it be the fact that it was a tropica fern? It gave off an odd odor but you couldn’t smell it unless you got up close to the tank, even so it wasn’t an unbearable smell, it just smelled a little weird, but I thought it was because I wasn’t used to underwater plants. I fed my triops daily with the use of the tropica fern as an extra food source because it is okay for triops to eat aquatic plants but I’m not sure if the tropica fern was very good for them considering it smelled a little weird. My triops only lived for 2 weeks & I tried a second batch & they still died but the first batch I had without the fern. Do you think it was the temperature that effected them & they would do better in the summer time when my room is always warm?

adminsta answers:

Most of the time it is overfeeding that kills Triops. Room temperature is ideal for hatching Triops but they can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, especially as eggs.

Donna Your Questions About How To Conserve Energy Around The House

Donna asks…

Need honest Opinions.?

I am hoping to get some honest opinions from landlords, other tenants, and anyone else with an opinion icon smile Your Questions About How To Conserve Energy Around The House
We are renting a house. Our lease ended 3/1 of this year. We were told 20 days later they were selling. Our LL said if we want ti stay until they sold we would get 3 months to move. We originally decided to stay but things have gotten very tense and stressful so we are moving. Here are some of our complaints/problems:

1. For the last 10 weeks we have had to endure 8 weekend open houses. When we try to tell them we have guests coming over or family staying the weekend they still hold open houses/showings.
2. They give us any where from 2-10 hours notice before a showing which has caused us to have to cancel our son’s speech therapy which is at the house. When we told them he has his therapy those days and times we got the response “Oh well don’t know what to tell you”. One time buyers showed up at dinner time.
3. We have received nasty emails from the LL saying our place isn’t tidy enough (she pays the electric so we try to conserve energy and not use the dryer or dishwasher so we put dishes in a dish rack to dry and we hang our clothes up to air dry not to mention we have a toddler who plays in the living room so sometimes his toys are laying around) despite not giving us enough time to clean she gets mad at us and says we are hindering the sale.
4. I share custody of my daughter because my LL is mad at us he is trying to prevent her from staying here since she isn’t on the lease. She is a minor and they knew we needed 3 bdrms cause of her (we have a toddler boy and didn’t think they should share a room).
5. LL got mad cause she didn’t give us notice she would be here at 3 with potential buyers and she caught me and my son napping (I am pregnant and get tired mid afternoon and take a nap when possible). Can’t even explain how weird to know she came in to my bedroom while I was a sleep.
6. LL complains when we use the A/C even though we only use it when absolutely needed (meaning all windows opened and no breeze at all even with the ceiling fans on) and demands we shut it off even if we are just taking a walk around the block (we do shut it off when we leave for work or we know we’re gonna be gone for a few hours).

Now in our defense we pay our rent on time and in full every month. We aren’t loud or disruptive in anyway. We always comply with showings despite very little notice and we are clean people but when she complains we go back and re clean. We have canceled numerous plans because they refuse to be even a little considerate and make sure we don’t have stuff going on in our home already (it really only bothers me during therapy time). Now I would like people to tell me what would they do in our situation (remember we are already moving but since we had to give 30 days notice they won’t let us leave until the first of August). I have spoken to them face to face and sent emails and all we get back is we will do what we want and have to to sell this house (yup got that response in an email). We just want some privacy to enjoy our place. We would LOVE for them to take in to consideration if we have plans here already. Is this asking too much? Is this unreasonable?
Thanks for the quick answer. The only thing the lease says as far as showings is “may enter a tenant’s apartment with reasonable
prior notice, and at a reasonable time: (a) to provide necessary or agreed upon repairs or services; (b) in accordance
with the lease; or (c) to show the apartment to prospective
purchasers or tenants” but nothing specifically about open houses. Also I read somewhere that a LL can sue the tenant for damages in they interfere with showings/open houses.
Ross we told them we found a place and can be out 7/15 but they said since the rent is paid on the first that is when we give notice and we still have to give 30 days which makes the earliest 8/1.
My question is about opinions if you were in our shoes not who owns what.
Ross we have put ourselves in thier shoes, that is why we have allowed showings with no notice but we have to draw a line somewhere. If you have ever been a tenant put yourself in our shoes. The state of NY deemed my son in need of services. These services are to be done at our home yet we have to cancel when they want to. not sure if you have kids but would you appreciate that? Also as I said before we are ready/willing to leave now but the LL WON’T let us. How would you feel if someone told you when and how often you could enjoy your home? We are not squatters, we pay to be here.

adminsta answers:

If your rent is paid and there is nothing in your lease about “open house” showings, you don’t have to let them in.
You can even call the police if they actually try to start trouble.

Carol Your Questions About How To Conserve Energy Around The House

Carol asks…

My brother and his wife are moving in with us…?

They are moving into our house in about a month. My brother is 22 and his wife is 19/20. I am the youngest kid in my family. My brother that is moving in with me didn’t live with us when I was a kid. I grew up as an only child with all my siblings older. I went to high school with my brothers’ wife. They are moving in with us because they want to get away from kansas, and are going to be moving to florida after they save up money while staying at our house so they can buy one of their own in florida. I haven’t been made to share anything, so I’m not sure how to go about this. My brother, his wife and I will be sharing one bathroom. I don’t want them messing up how me and my parents do things around here. I do know that it will be different. I don’t know how to explain some things to them without coming out as sounding abrasive and rude. Like how i keep the bathroom. My parents are on a tight budget and we also don’t know how to kindly tell them that they need to conserve energy. Don’t get me wrong, We are excited about them coming here. Can anyone give me advice on this?

adminsta answers:

You’re right, things WILL be different…… But if you keep remembering that they are only at ‘your’ house for a short while… It will be easier…

Sharing space…when you’ve never had to do it before is going to be …different… You can make this easier by making space for them… And yourself…. I know you are used to your own bathroom…but maybe you can set out baskets… Three of them.. One for your stuff… And one for each of them.. It will help them be organized and neat… They way it seems you’d like it

Also a SHORT list of house rules… (guidelines) might be helpful…remember they have lived by their rules… Moving back in with your parents is both embarrassing and difficult for them too.

Lisa Your Questions About How To Conserve Energy Around The House

Lisa asks…

Ever wondered why she hates me so much? I LOVE HER TO DEATH!!!!?

Okay, maybe the other woman IS better for you,
but for the love of God, WHEN ARE you going to move
in with her?
When you two are together, I have so much peace.
The house is clean, the house is clean and,
OH YEAH – THE HOUSE IS CLEAN!!!!!
So, I would rather conserve all my energy I spend
making your dr/dentist/jail appointments, and
just use that energy toward resting, reading a book, or
oh . . . I don’t know . . maybe knocking a vase over by
mentally telepathy-ing it to death
So, can’t you just leave, or ask her to move in with us already?
It’s so much easier when she’s around
Maybe she can make your lunch, or take out your bathroom
trash or something?
She spends alot of time on her appearance
Maybe she can show me how to make
those fake brows or hers
You know – the ones that look like two
webworms on their first date?
Or, perhaps she can show me how to smoke
with that look on her face like she is
blowing eggs through a straw
OKAY – SO . . . .
THANKS

Steven Your Questions About How To Conserve Energy Around The House

Steven asks…

How do you feel about the electric company making you pay a large deposit while you are late?

Here is my issue with this.

I understand that a deposit is security for the company because of the persons credit rating as well as other factors. We have lived in the same house 15 years. We had a small deposit the first year and got it back after that. Everything has been fine.

About three months ago, my father lost his job and so did I. We called all of out bills and told them that we will be late because we now no longer have any income. None of our bills were late at that time and we were just being proactive.

Well we had some money saved up so when our bills started to go late, we paid a little every two weeks. It wasn’t enough to take care of the past due but it was something. We called them everytime so they would notate that we were trying. We conserved on energy and so forth. Our electric bill is now usually in the $70 range opposed to around $150.

We got a shut off notice. I contacted the local county offices for help and they are helping us.
Our current bill is $232. We just got the new bill in the mail that says $532!!!! I called them and they said because we were late, we now have to pay a deposit. I told them I thought if you already turned out paower off, you could require a deposit in order to have it turned back on. They said no, they can require a deposit anytime while I still have service.

We are supposed to be shut off next week and they told us they want at least the past due of $148 plus the entire deposit to avoid interuption. I spoke to a supervisor to ask for an extension and they said no.

I don’t get it. We are normally good customers and this is terrible that we are being kicked when we are down,

Has this ever happened to you? How do you feel about this? I think this is wrong!!!!

adminsta answers:

You’ve acted wisely, and done everything right. The county will help you, and this is exactlyl the kind of situation this sort of help is for. But the electric company is a business, which has to be run as a business. They deal every day with people who tell them lies, or don’t tell them anything at all. You’re paying for the sins of others. But I think you’ll do all right. I hope you and your dad get new jobs soon. Good luck.
