Your Questions About Windmill Power

Chris Your Questions About Windmill Power

Chris asks…

How many bulbs of 60W can power by using 2kw windmill?

How many household (light, fan,TV etc) can a 2kw windmill power?

adminsta answers:

First you must sure the Voltage is stable, it’s mean not depend on wind, or you must have stabilizer, or the windmill unit has own stabilizer system.(the voltage not going up and down).
Then calculate how many household for 2 kw = 2000 watt power supply, i.e:
1.Refrigerator 500 watt.
2.Washing machine 500 watt.
3.Air Condition 1 Hp ~ 750 watt.
4.The rest 250 watt for lighting (it can be 50 watt x 5 = 250 watt)
This only example, depend on what you have.
But, if you can’t guaranty the stability & continuity, I sugest :
1. Don’t use household with motor (i.e Refrigerator, Air Condition, Washing Machine, Water Pump etc). Heater, Toaster, Fan is OK.
2.For lighting, use Incandesce lamp, not Neon Lamp (TL = Tube Lamp), Mercury Lamp.
For 60 W Incandesce Lamp 30 pcs is OK.

Thomas Your Questions About Windmill Power

Thomas asks…

where i can find the detail design and drawings for vertical windmill power generation?

I want to make a windmill power generation for domestic use. I want to find the detialed drawings for a vertical windmill power generation tower.

adminsta answers:

VAWT (vertical axis wind turbines) designs are around, checking the patent database might be your best bet, the TMA one is there. But just because they have a patent doesn’t mean that it works or works as well as they claim.

Many people simplify the discussion to one of windswept area (size of turbine) to shaft power, and claim they have the greatest efficency but the real issue is cost to construct to watts, with factors to be included in the cost such as longevity, and storm surviveablity. I myself am a wind energy researcher (as well as lot’s of other things) and find the TMA claims to be unlikely.

If you are looking for a nice simple design to build and learn from,
check out

they used a conventional auto alternator that caused them some grief, using a photovoltaic charge controler might have gotten them a lot more juice. They also chose simplicity to construct, but could have chosen a harder to build “wing” that might have given them almost twice the energy out.

Good Luck
remember that most great discoveries come from people who submerge themselves in all the available information, then get a good nites sleep

Helen Your Questions About Windmill Power

Helen asks…

If you generate your own power (windmill or otherwise) and you generate an excess does your meter go backwards

A new business just installed a windmill down the street. Apparently if they generate excess power the Indianpolis Power and Light buys it back. Does that mean when they are generating excess power their meter runs backwards?

adminsta answers:

There are two types of energy meters.
1)It only lets the flow of current in one direction, and if excess power is generated, it is lost as heat energy in the wires or the meter.
2)It lets the flow of current in both the directions, but metering in the opposite direction could or could not be provided. It depends upon the type of the generator.

And let me tell you that the current flows in the direction from higher potential (vltage) to lower, so it is not the power which controls the flow of current, it is the voltage that determines the direction of flow. Normally power generating equipments have constant voltage, and normally the voltage of grids is much much higher then the power generating equipments installed at homes or domestically. Thus is hard for current to flow back to the grid station.
Hope I answered well.
Thanks.

John Your Questions About Windmill Power

John asks…

PWM? Has anyone developed the technology for a personal windmill to power one’s house?

If not that, then how about a personal windlass (like the wind up radios and flashlights) to generate enough electricty to power one’s house? If so, I want one.

adminsta answers:

Look in the Grizzly tool catalog. There are several wind mills for producing electricity, some pretty powerful.
Contrary to popular belief the power company does NOT “have” to buy the excess power back. In fact, they almost stopped the wind farm going on in the “Thumb” of Northeastern Michigan.
Over four hundred windmills are going in for a savings of 25% to all people here.

Nancy Your Questions About Windmill Power

Nancy asks…

Could I power a Chevy Volt with a windmill in Wichita, KS?

Chevy Volt is electric. Windmills make electric power. Wichita has nothing if not wind. So if I plugged a Volt in to a Windmill every night, could I run the car to something like its full range the next day?

adminsta answers:

Yes

Jenny Your Questions About Windmill Power

Jenny asks…

Is Windmill Power Worth It?

I was wondering if windmill power works, Like is it worth building a windmill?

adminsta answers:

Warning! Windmills can be VERY noisey and tick of any close neighbors you may have. You may get sick of the noise pollution they create, too…

Sandy Your Questions About Windmill Power

Sandy asks…

Would it be possible to purchase and actually use a real windmill for power in florida?

Even if it were to just supplement your electric bill ?

adminsta answers:

Are you kidding? With all the retired blow hard politicians down there. It would never stand up to all that hot air.

Seriously there is not enough constant sustained wind there to use it as a primary power source, maybe as a back up source if you live close enough to the ocean or gulf to have a good constant breeze blowing all the time.

Daniel Your Questions About Windmill Power

Daniel asks…

How many households can one 2kw windmill power?

adminsta answers:

Unless you live very simply not even one. Typical consumption in US household is 30 kwh per day (2001 numbers, all I could find). So, unless its turning 75% of the time at full tilt its not even going to serve 1 at 100% of usage

Donald Your Questions About Windmill Power

Donald asks…

how fast are the tips of a power generating windmill spinning?

i was told by a physics teacher about 200 mph. i think thats a little crazy. site your source if you find anything interesting.

adminsta answers:

The turbines in the source turn at up to 22 rpm (revolutions per minute) and have a diameter of 70 meters. Doing the math:
Circumference = Pi * diameter
=3.14 * 70
=220 meters.

22 rpm means the tips cover 22 times that distance in one minute which is 22 * 220 = 4,840 meters in one minute.

That is 4.84 km or about 3 miles a minute.

60 MPH is one mile per minute, so that wind turbine’s tips are moving 180 miles per hour at top speed.
