North Las Vegas signs pact to save energy, money

Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 | 3:45 p.m.

North Las Vegas will soon join cities such as Henderson and Carson City in implementing new energy conservation measures to save money.

The City Council voted last week to authorize up to $2.2 million in medium-term obligation bonds to finance the cost of building energy improvement projects.

After an energy audit identified several energy conservation measures the city could be taking, the council voted to enter into an agreement with Ameresco, a private energy service company.

“It allows the city to make an investment in its buildings and infrastructure by using our energy savings,” said Skip Grey, the city’s sustainability coordinator . “These qualified energy conservation bonds have much lower interest rates.”

The 10-year contract with Ameresco guarantees annual savings of more than $250,000, 90 percent of which will be used to pay for the projects. about $24,000 of that will be credited to the city’s general fund every year for the next decade.

When the contract is over, the city will keep the total savings. if the projected savings don’t match the actual savings, Ameresco must pay the difference.

The survey included 118 city buildings and sites, such as the city’s main library.

“The most important one is the main library chiller,” Grey said. “It’s over 20 years old and on its last leg. Energy costs will be less with the new energy-efficient chiller.”

Other areas in the city that will see energy conservation improvements are the indoor and outdoor lights in city parks and buildings, computer controls for city desktop computers and a new pumping station, storage tank and fuel truck to make fuel cost reductions.

“Basically, all those projects will be paid for in 10 years,” Grey said.

He said the city’s financial woes wouldn’t stop it from planning for the future.

“We are looking forward to all these great projects,” Grey said. “We’re trying to be progressive and be a leader in energy savings.”

Solar Power: What’s all The Hype About?

Solar energy and its benefits are not the easiest to understand initially. However it is true that the fossil fuels used currently will not last forever, and therefore new forms of energy generation are required. A method that has been around longest as a possibility is solar power. However just how do solar panels work and what makes them effective? this article is aimed at covering the answers to these questions.

Solar power is generated through the use of solar panels. these are silicon sheets placed together with electric wiring attached in order to siphon off the energy they generate. when direct sunlight hits the panel, the incoming photon from the sunlight knocks an electron from the panel loose. this can create a motion of electrons, or a current. In this way the panel is able to produce energy through sunlight.

The benefit of solar power is that it can function without producing excess waste such as carbon emissions. this means its carbon footprint is much smaller than, say, burning coal. this could be said of nuclear power as well, but nuclear power has its own issues with waste and has a much larger price tag associated with it.

This brings us to price. while solar power is not necessarily cheap, a large number of consumers are still able to invest in it for their own homes. this sets it apart in many ways from other green sources of energy such as wind power generation.

Because consumers can already benefit from solar energy, this makes it a very accessible way of providing extra power or supplementing power usage otherwise. this may be one reason why there has been significant talk about solar power in the past. its potential for widespread usage is significant.

However that does not mean solar power has no improvements to look to. it may also wind up being replaced in the future by another form of energy generation. However at the moment it is typically seen as a good first step toward green energy production. With fears over climate change and rising fuel costs, it’s important that we all do what we can to avoid unnecessary energy consumption, for the benefit of the planet as well as our bank balances. Going green in your home doesn’t have to mean changing the way you live though, especially as many energy-saving strategies produce the same results as their power-hungry alternatives, meaning no compromise is needed.

Some of the most immediate and practical steps that can be taken to reduce the energy consumption of your home lighting don’t even require spending any money. Simply by making sure you always switch off lights when leaving a room can have a significant effect on your electricity bills, and this extends to making the most of the daylight hours by not switching on your lights until you need to.

A good indication of this can be when the street lamps switch on outside; if your home is dark even during the daylight hours though, it’s likely you need to take steps to increase the amount of sunlight entering your rooms. If you don’t like having the curtains open all day, replacing heavy drapes with lighter material or blinds can be a stylish home improvement choice, and you can similarly help daylight to travel further by leaving internal doors open or installing transparent glass panels into outside doors to let more light in.

What about when the sun goes down? Being eco-friendly doesn’t mean sitting in the dark or relying on candles, of course, but strategic use of home lighting can go a long way towards reducing the amount of electricity that’s needed to light your rooms after dark. By placing floor and table lamps in key areas of each room, you can limit your use of overhead lighting, which often requires more light bulbs, and make more effective use of task lighting when reading in bed.

Bulbs themselves are another key area where prices can be cut dramatically without losing illumination, thanks to energy saving light bulbs. These bulbs are now widely available in many shops and consume up to 80% less electricity than standard equivalents, with no discernible difference in the amount of light emitted. Suitable for installing around the home, energy saving light bulbs are a quick and convenient method of lowering your power usage without having to invest heavily in renewable energy sources like solar power in the hope of making savings further down the line.
