Article by Malcolm BassKelvin KelvinKelvin Neal

How much money will your folks spend on electricity this year? Since the average home uses approximately thirty thousand watts in a month’s time, the number can be actually stunning. However, you are able to save your folks thousands of bucks if you make a wind generator. What Is a Wind Generator? However, a wind generator is a device that uses the wind to create electricity. Now here’s the exciting part: a wind generator will help you eliminate your electrical bill! Granted, there are a few different factors that must be considered but the fact is, it is possible. Here are some of the things you want to consider before you make a wind generator. What Do I should Make a Wind Generator?First of all, you want to determine if you get enough wind where you reside to power your wind generator. In order to see major amounts of created electricity, you’ll need to average a wind of nine Miles per hour. A turbine must be about twenty feet taller than the highest obstacle in the instant area. This will permit you to harness the wind without obstruction. You’ll need a tower on which to install the blade of the turbine. You’ll need a DC motor, but this could be acquired new for around 50 USD or so. PVC can be employed to make the blades and most of the other parts are extraordinarily simply accessible. How Much Will I Save When I’m making a Wind Generator? Most families use about 1000 watts of electricity in a twenty-four hour period. If a wind generator is installed in an area that averages wind of nine miles per hour, you can easily produce 1000 watts of electricity in the same time frame. In ClosingYou can literally save your folks thousands of bucks when you make a wind generator. If you were to get a new wind generator, you will spend thousands of bucks. However, you can make a wind generator yourself for under a hundred dollars. Ordinary grid power is not environmentally friendly. A wind generator can help you do your part to create a better environment for everyone.

With the cost of fuel being very unstable and the ever rising price of electricity isn`t it nice to know that there is a way that we can reduce our utility bills. I`m not talking about going round and turning off every light and appliance that you are not using (although this is of course a good start) I`m talking about renewable wind energy. Did you know that if you build your own wind generator you can make free energy for your home? Wind power for homes is one of the fastest growing sources of power of any of the renewable energy technologies available today.

When you build your own wind generator you are harnessing the full power of nature and turning it into electricity, electricity that is free. Wind power for homes works on exactly the same principle as the large industrial wind turbines that are sprouting up everywhere. The flow of air turns the wind turbine to create electricity. As the speed of the wind increases so the amount of power your DIY wind generator produces also increases.

If you live in even a moderately windy place then it would be a smart investment to build your own wind generator so that you can start to make free energy for your home. And even if where you live is not such a windy area you can still use your DIY wind generator to supplement your electricity and cut down the cost of what you are paying to your current electricity supplier.

Another good reason why you should build your own wind generator is that by using simple Do-It-Yourself guides anyone can easily and cheaply start to make free energy for their homes. You do not need any special skills and even the most modest handyman or woman can put together their own DIY wind generator quickly and easily and at a lot less cost than you may think.

Apart from all the free energy that you can make with a DIY wind generator you can also pat yourself on the back for having one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly forms of producing renewable energy that there is. A wind generator does not produce carbon dioxide, or methane, or any of the other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, in fact when you use wind power for homes there is little or no pollution at all.

Wind power for homes has become so popular and so efficient that in certain places it is even possible to sell the excess electricity that your DIY wind generator produces back to the electricity companies. So in fact in many cases the big energy companies that people once paid for their power are now paying them for theirs.

So to sum up, if you want to make free energy to power your home then you really should build your own wind generator. Not only is it cheap and easy to make a DIY wind generator but you will also have an everlasting supply of free energy.

Wind Generator Designs: The Basics

Article by Mike Hicknon

A good wind generator design can help you to dramatically cut the cost of your utility bills and it can also help you to make a difference with the environment. Wind power has been used for a lot of years now and many people use wind power to run the electrical appliances in their homes, but how do you know which is the best wind turbine to use? There are many designs of turbines available to purchase and build so have a look at this article to compare and find out more about the types of wind generators you can get today.

Horizontal axis:

This type of wind turbine has a rotor shaft and an electric generator at the very top of a tower which will be pointed into the direction of the wind, smaller wind generators are pointed by a vane but more modern designs don’t always need a tail vane. Larger designs will use a wind sensor as well as a servo motor to generate electricity.

A lot of these designs will use a gear box which will turn the blades of the turbine so that it can become fast enough to drive an electric generator. This type of design will produce turbulence behind it which means that it should have the generator placed upwind of the actual tower. The blades of the generator will usually be stiff in order to stop the blades being damaged by strong winds.

Wind turbine blades are often places quite a distance away from the front of the tower and are tilted up, you can also find downwind generators which do not need any other mechanisms to keep them lined with the wind. During strong winds the blades will bend with the wind to cut down on any wind resistance. Many horizontal axis designs are made in upwind designs and there are also a lot of sub types to the horizontal axis generators.

Vertical axis wind turbines:

The vertical axis design will have a main rotor shaft which is placed vertically and this means that the wind turbine doesn’t always need to be pointed towards the wind to work. These designs are good for using on sites with changeable wind directions because they can collect the wind power from all directions. The downside of this particular design in that they are hard to mount onto towers so that they will normally need to be installed close to the base and rest on the ground. The vertical axis design is easy to access for mechanical components but wind speeds are often slower which mean less energy collected depending upon the size of the turbine.

You can find out more information on the different designs of wind turbines by running a search on any good search engine which will be able to give you a full and comprehensive list on wind generator designs.

Windmills made their appearance in the Europe in the late 12th century. They might have been stirred by the Middle East’s vertical-axle windmills. This, nevertheless, seems little doubtful given the fact that the Europeans utilized a diverse design from that which was seen in the Middle East. Approximately all the windmills of Europe had been seen to swivel on what was a horizontal axis. Following are some famous windmills around the globe-

1) Kinderdijk, Netherlands

Around thousand windmills persist to exist in Netherlands. The biggest concentration of them, nevertheless, might be found at Kinderdijk. These had been utilized to drain surplus water, which was there in the polders, which were located below the sea levels.

2) Mykonos Windmills, Greece

The windmills of Mykonos are one of the most appreciated structures on the island. There are 16 windmills in total on the island.

3) The Windmills of La Mancha, Spain

The arid and vast plains of Spain are home to the Castilla -La Mancha. The land is typified by its wine, the famous windmills and medieval castles.

4) Zaanse Schans, Netherlands

The region of Zaanse Schans is an open – air conservation region and museum. It is situated on the bank of River Zaan in Netherlands; and exhibits what can characteristically be called architecture conventional to the area. There are green and black wooden homes, craftsmen’s workshops and numerous windmills that are in operation till today.

5) Oland Windmills, Sweden

Oland is known as the second biggest island of Sweden. It is sparingly settled. The island is conquered by woods and farm lands. The four hundred odd wooden windmills of Oland have become identical with the image of this island. These windmills were made for the requirements of individual farms. Danish Windmill

Elk Horn’s Danish Windmill is America’s only genuine working Danish Windmill, which was constructed in Norre Snede, Denmark in 1848, and brought to United States in November 1975 and reconstructed in Elk Hornby community volunteers in 1976.

Windshare Lagerway

This is North America’s first truly urban wind turbine situated on the grounds of the Canadian National Exposition. For installation of this plant, Toronto Renewable Energy Co-operative did a five year struggle, which now generates 1000 kilowatts of electricity

Huron Wind Farm

This wind farm is a first commercial wind farm in the city of Ontario, which is located in the village of Inverhuron, Ontario and consists of 5 Vestas V80-1.8MW wind turbines. This wind farm generates enough electricityto provide more than 2000 homes annually.

Question by hptn: How can an car alternator be used as a wind generator?

I am talking about an electric car alternator, an electric alternator needs a current first to generate magnet, then the rotating magnet generates electricity. In the wind power case, at the beginning, there is no electricity to generate magnet, how to make electricity?
Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by G33K
An alternator is already a generator (i do believe it is a DC current, since that’s what a car’s battery runs on). All you need to do is mount it higher, remove the wheel that the belt goes onto, and connect the alternator to a voltage regulator and a battery. If you want to connect it to your house to help ease your electric bill, you need an AC power inverter. Here are a few helpful pages:

I know that you’re worrying about the rising cost of all the energy prices, this is happening across the world. But did you know you can make this impact lessen on you and your bank account? They make a home build wind generator which is using alternative energy source to produce electrical power for their house.

Everyone all over the world are making wind generators at home to lessen their power bills, and once you do make your own you will be saving our planet as well. Click here to learn how to make home built wind generators to lower your electric bill each month.

So just what wind generator to start with? A wind generator is simply a device, most often than not it’ll be a wind turbine that uses the power of the blowing wind to make kinetic energy with the spinning rotor blades. Those blades are then connected to the generator.

Then the generator makes use of something that is called electromagnetic, all of this means is that there will be magnets that are spinning around a conductor. The spinning of the magnets round the conductor will turn the kinetic energy into electricity. After the electric power is generated it’ll either charge up a group of electric batteries that you have for storage or it will be connected directly to the power grid.

Now this is an important concept that you need to keep in mind, wind turbines make power by using thin air. What this means is that the wind turbines must be larger compared to the power that it will be able to generate. The best location for a home built wind turbine to be set up it where you have constant blowing wind, as you should know by now that if the wind blades are not spinning you’ll not be producing any electrical energy for your house. The length of the blades will be 5 meters (16 feet) from tip to tip in length.

Don’t be concerned you are able to construct more compact ones that will generate electric power for your home. So that wind generator that has blade of 5 meters (16 feet) will usually be able to produce 500 kWh of electricity per year.

So the average home makes use of about 4500 kWh annually of electricity, so if you do the math you will be making a savings, and if you want to save more all you truly have to do is construct more wind generators. Windtura 750 Wind Generator

I like this new turbine. Finally one that is affordable and puts out good power – not to mention being well engineered and having a 2-year warrenty. Are you done playing with toy turbines based on ceiling fans, treadmill motors, and car alternators – all of which struggle to even squeeze out a few amps unless there is a wind storm? Time to get serious. I’m not associated with Windy Nation – just a fan is all.

Question by Tuck: What grants can you get for installing a wind generator?

My grandfather is an old styled farmer with new ideas. He is very into wind and i would like to help him. He isn’t going to settle for anything less then an industrial sized one

BOTTOM LINE
What grants can he get. I am aware that we are trying to re power america through wind. The power company offers very little for resale electricity. How can the government help?

Answer by gduncan
I think the grants available are going to depend on where you live. In places like California, there are incentives in place to really make renewable energy practical. In other states, no such such incentives exist.

Treadmill motor wind generator turbine DC gear up belt drive Montana

This is my second wind generator made from a treadmill motor this time geared up 3.6:1. Many of the parts were recycled from the same exercise machine with the exception of 3″ exhaust clamps, angle iron, nylon reinforced vacuum belt and some hardware and other incidentals. The spindle assembly fits the standard mounting bracket of the motor and is both adjustable (belt tension) and bearing supported. I de-toothed a saw blade for the hub and drilled it out with a precision collet index. The other parts were either bored out or turned down with a tool room lathe. I took the motor all apart and it looked hardly used (most are), and cleaned up the commutator for good measure anyway. The frame itself is mig welded steel. In the video you can see amps first then volts, around 4.5 and 22 respectively but the multimeter was acting up a little so not sure about accuracy. The Subaru headlight bulb is running one filament. Blades are thin gauge steel and almost 60″ diameter and will start up the machine even when motor is shorted with very little wind. Will probably go with a deeper gear ratio and thinner tipped blades on the next one. Thanks for looking

Question by oakwhiz: How do you connect a solar panel and wind generator in parallel?

I have an ~18v solar panel and a ~15v wind turbine. Sometimes one generates more voltage than the other. How would I get both of them to charge one ~12v battery? I can’t just connect them in parallel with diodes, because in that case, only the higher voltage source gets used. Is there a special charge controller circuit that will do this?

Best answer:

Answer by David
There are controllers to do this, but they are very expensive. Why not two batteries, one for each generator and a battery ‘change over’ switch’ on the output. When one battery is low switch to the other.

What do you think? Answer below!

Article by Tony Jones

In the past few years much has been made of building wind generators at home. Their was a time when the only wind turbine kits on the market were grossly overpriced which led the average home owner with the decision pay the high price to experiment with alternative energy or to try building one on their own. If you search the internet you will find people that have used a wide range of methods to build a do it yourself wind generator at there home. Brake drums, washing machine motors, computer tape drive, ceiling fan motors have all been scavenged in the name of wind power. Some being more useful than others.

A few years ago now some enterprising folks put together a booklet describing in general terms how a home made wind generator could be built out of a Ametek 38 servo motor. Interestingly enough that particular motor was not a good wind generator motor at all, but the e books for all estimations had to have been a best seller. The price of components to build wind turbines at home went through the roof. Even today tape drive motors that were not worth twenty dollars three yeas ago are now selling at over two hundred and fifty dollars. The ametek 99 motors has been denoted the most sought after and rarest of finds and now sells for around five hundred dollars. The whole thing has spun out of control. The initial purpose was to save money, that is how the do it yourself wind mill was born. My observation is currently consumers are more willing to spend five hundred dollars on a tape drive motor that was worth twenty dollars three years ago that they are to spend a similar amount on a reputable all inclusive wind turbine kit.

Many of these consumers are sorely disappointed when the discover the brushes on the 20 year old tape drive motor are not made anymore and once they are wore out is worthless. I am not necessarily a proponent of wind turbine kits and paying manufactures prices, I just believe it is unfortunate when I see home owners throwing away money going about wind energy in a way that is not likely to meet there needs. There are other choices now for the home owner inclined toward the do it yourself type of wind generator. Hurricane Wind power has released a series of wind turbine generators that will out perform any of the generators currently sold that cost less and are maintenance free. When building a wind generator it is very important to get the motor to charge with as few RPM as possible. This is the essence of building a good wind turbine as the lower RPM equate to lower wind speed it take to charge batteries. These generators not only produce 12 volts with 40 rpm, they have a dual stator that has a non iron core to decrease magnetic drag and ensure the lowest startup speed on the market. Basically no brushes, super low RPM, and less torque to start up patented technology made in the USA.

A few months ago I was down on the idea of home made wind turbines. I however see promise again as the technology now available to the home builder allow construction of long lasting turbines that are cost effective. While the supply of DC motors that can be used as wind generators has dwindled and the price on the remaining rare items has skyrocketed it is now again possible to make a make this project worthwhile. The Hurricane PMA can produce as much as 200 volts at direct drive speeds with no gearing needed. It is now a fact that not only is it rewarding and a good family project but the home made wind generator will simply out perform the kit from the manufacturers such as Southwest. So yes it is again a good idea to build a home wind generator as long as you stay away from overpriced obsolete generator heads.
