Nearly everybody is aware of what a wind turbine is and the way they produce energy, yet for those which don’t know I will explain. If you envision a plane propeller seated atop a tall tower, this is precisely what a turbine looks like. When the wind blows the turbine the blades make the rotor whirl and the movement of the rotor causes the generator within the turbine crank out power. Inside the power generator are many magnets and loads of copper wire, which produces electricity. It is a rather simple system.

Naturally for the turbine to operate there will have to be wind. The normal height for wind turbines is 30 meters, which allows them to utilize the more powerful winds that take place at that height. The consequence of the stronger wind at that elevation is that the turbines produce more electricity. Obviously there should be enough wind to make electricity from the outset. Prior to an installation of turbines is designed, detailed analysis of wind patterns for the intended site is reviewed. One excellent location is in coastal zones because there are generally consistent wind patterns in these places. Of course, the wind can change its direction which presents another drawback for wind turbines. Nonetheless the design is incredibly clever and they are built so that the rotor turns toward the wind, enabling them to capture the wind from any direction.

Because of their efficient design, turbines can generate a lot of power that can be utilized for domestic or commercial applications. You can also store the electricity into batteries for when there is no wind. While they can certainly produce a lot of electricity, they’re not cheap at all and getting back your introductory investment on one may take many years. Unlike other green energy methods, wind turbines will continue to work 24/7, providing there is wind. In locations that experience many hours of darkness during some months, turbines may be a much better green solution as compared to solar panels. Another great thing about wind turbines is that they’re eco-friendly as they produce absolutely no pollution. The standard sources of hydro, which includes nuclear reactors, create incredible pollution that could be reduced by turbines. Another advantage is that turbines are harvesting energy from a regularly renewing source. There is no risk of turbines not having enough propulsion.

As with nearly anything there are some down sides of using wind turbines for energy. They’re certainly not a pretty sight, specifically because they’re so big. Many government authorities choose to put wind turbines on seaside areas and out to sea because of the large amounts of wind in these types of areas, but many people protest saying that they blight the surroundings. Noise pollution is another complaint due to the friction of the rotor going up against the shaft when it spins. While good for meeting the needs of humans, they can be harmful to birds and bats. Bats specifically are susceptible, simply because their sonar system is disrupted by the rapid movement in the air. There are no figures on how frequently this happens, however.

The overall benefits of wind turbines seem to over-shadow the disadvantages at the moment. With suitable planning they can be very useful and effective.

These days there is no reason to put up with soaring electricity costs. You can easily make your own windmill and slash your utility costs significantly or even eliminate them altogether. All your windmill parts can be found in a salvage yard and should only run you roughly 0.

Understand that most average sized home windmills are a fairly straight forward design. If you’re and “average” person with basic construction abilities and a willingness to follow directions, then you can definitely build your own windmill. The larger turbines over 1000 Watts are a bit more complicated. Start off with a design under 1000 Watts. You can always build another one if you need additional electricity.

A small DC motor, tower, blades and base are the basic elements of a home windmill. You can even use common materials found in any scrap yard. An old sewing machine can provide you with the motor you need.

Tower height is an important factor to consider. The higher your structure, the more wind turbulence it can harvest. You’ll get much better performance and power output. You can also quadruple your wind harvesting power simply by doubling the size of your rotor blades.

Ordering a pre-made kit is another option for you. But your costs will be considerably higher. Expect to pay anywhere from 0 up to 00 or more.

The plans you decide to follow can make a huge difference. For some reason, the majority of plans I’ve seen are way more complicated than they need to be and this discourages people from making their own windmill. Keep things simple, there’s no reason to turn this into rocket science. Professional
blueprints will be clear and concise without leaving any steps out. With a little ambition and the ability to follow instructions, you’ll be enjoying free electricity in no time.

So how do you find windmill plans that are practical and realistic for the “average” person? After sorting through dozens of confusing and vague guides, I’ve chosen what I believe are your 3 best options. Go to Make Your Own Windmill to read my reviews. Most of these windmills can easily be built using common materials that cost under 0.

What errors do you see here
Am I on track with the topic

The topic of this essay is>>>>

There have been many technological discoveries and advancements that have occurred in your lifetime. All of them thanks to great individuals who demonstrate for a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The transition from VHS to Blu-Ray and DVDs, the transition from analog phones to smartphones capable of accessing internet data, and the discovery of the vaccine for the H!N1 Virus, are some of the many advancements that have occured in our lifetime.

Taking into consideration our current progress, how do you see the world 20 years in the future? What new advancements in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) do you see happening?

This is the essay I wrote>>>

How do I see the world 20 years in the future? I see a future where science, technology, engineering and math has become way more advanced than what it was in the past, where STEM makes our lives more easier than ever before. One area in which great advancements have been made with STEM is the medical field. Another area of STEM in the future is green technology were there are no more nuclear power plants and an alternate fuel for our vehicles. The Internet is in almost everything we use like our televisions, cars, stoves and many other devices and appliances that we use everyday.

In the medical field there are robots that perform surgery on humans that are very difficult and risky for a doctor to perform. The robots are able to save more people’s lives because they are able to operate on areas that doctors could not do in the past, for example, the robots can successfully transplant any organ in the body that someone might need in order to live. There are really tiny robots that go into your body and cure diseases such as cancer. An example would be the tiny robots are able to go into your body and deliver radiation directly inside a cancerous tissue or they are able to go inside a smoker’s lungs and clean them up like a vacuum and prevent lung cancer. Although robots that are able to perform surgery better than human doctors or surgeons they have still not replaced humans as doctors and probably never will, they will only assist the doctor or surgeon. People who had lost a limb are now able to replace them with fully functional robotic limbs, like Anakin Skywalker’s hand from the movie “Star Wars”. Blind people are able to see again with bionic eyes. Doctors and scientists can transplant blind people’s eyes with bionic eyes.

The power plants, which are harmful to the environment, have been replaced with advanced windmills and solar technology. There are new kinds of solar panels that are more affordable and are more advanced then the last generations of solar panels so more people can have solar panels on their houses. All cars now run on alternate fuel such as hydrogen and natural gas, which generate less harmful air pollutants and greenhouse gases or do not generate harmful gases at all. (ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR THIS PARAGRAPH?)

The Internet is on almost every type of transportation, mobile device, appliances and almost every classroom of almost every school in most parts of the world. Let’s say you went to a restaurant last week and liked what you ate but do not want to go back to that restaurant again and you want to cook it your self at home, you can just go on the stove that has internet and type in the food you want to cook and it will tell you what ingredients you need and how to cook it. Every student in a classroom will have a computer with an operating system designed just for school that make sure the students do not do anything else but school work the computers. For example, after the teacher has lectured the class the kids will be tested on their knowledge on the computers and once they are done the computers will send all the information to the teacher’s computer telling the teacher what the students need to improve on.

Can you also help me on writing an ending paragraph for this essay? THANK! YOU!

Have you ever caught yourself wondering just how much electricity is utilized for powering your TV while you’re viewing your favorite show? In the same way, how much do you think it costs you to power your fridge all day long? Maybe it’s never really been that much of a concern to you, and it never needs to be, because the distribution of electricity has come a very long way in the past 200 years or so. Electricity is a lot easier to utilize than ever, with major power providers using resources like coal and oil to generate the energy that you need to have for effectively operating every day.

Nevertheless, there are times when just drawing the electrical power from a company does not work for your advantage. When the power goes out, there’s nothing to run your important utilities. Whenever prices come to be very high, there is no quick alternative. On the other hand, for the prepared person, costs and electricity outages are not a problem, in particular if an individual makes use of the potential of home wind generators.

What are home wind generators? They are simply a system that harnesses the power of the wind to produce electricity for your use. A windmill is a wind generator, and the wind turbine is a far more sophisticated type. The truth is, humans have been harnessing wind power for over 5000 years! Customarily, this power was used to grind grain for the production of food, but over time windmills have broadened their use to deliver a replenishable supply of energy. Wind energy is truly “green,” considering that it uses the natural power of the wind. Like solar cells, windmills can be thought to harness the sun’s natural energy, since wind is directly linked to temperature variations in the air.

Wind generators work just like any alternative source of energy generation. They utilize the mechanical energy of the wind and transform that energy into an electrical current, producing a voltage that can be made use of immediately or employed to charge batteries. The usual wind generator has a tall tower, providing it the height it requires in order to use the highest amount of airflow. The tower aligns the blades of the generator into the direction of the wind, and then the ensuing rotation of the blades rotates a magnet inside the generator, generating electric current. The device is really basic, yet the uses are unlimited!

Incredibly, research was done proving that if the world were to maximize the number of wind generators in perfect locations, then just 20% of the electrical power generated from those wind generators would be ample to power the entire globe. Talk about potential! Surely, the power of the wind would be a terrific boon to the earth’s energy crisis. Should you find yourself impressed by this, you can actually have a hand in producing this power with a very simple rig of your own, a great project to tackle! In reality, relative to its advantages, the windmill is quite inexpensive to build yourself, and cost-wise will run you around 30 times less when compared with getting a pre-manufactured one.

When you happen to live in a windy area, it is a complete waste of resources to not build one. The wind speeds necessary to power up home wind generators are approximately 10-20 mph and naturally the greater the wind speed, the more power can be produced. You can find numerous resources online for helping you build your own, and they all emphasize that the job can be done by anyone, despite the lack of engineering experience. People report being able to supply electricity for their own household, and some people report having the ability to sell some of their excess power they generate back to the power companies, a tantalizing idea indeed!

Wind generators have been utilized for many generations. The applications of this piece of equipment will prove indispensable, both now and in the future. With so many issues due to the burning of fossil fuels, it is a responsibility of all of us to try to produce a way of utilizing clean energy. Moreover, the potential of wind generators to save enormous amounts of money is huge. Check into building your very own wind generation system right away!

In the not-so-distant past, windmills were a common sight at mills and farms. Today, wind energy is once again becoming an important source of power generation. It is a viable option as an alternative energy source, as opposed to non-renewable sources of energy. Windmills can help you produce electricity at home, and reduce your power and utility bills. If you have an interest in building projects, and saving energy around your home, you should build your own windmill. Even if you are not handy with tools or building things from scratch, kits are available that can help you step by step to build a windmill.

If you are a regular handyman who routinely makes home improvements, you are probably already excited to build your own windmill. All you need are the materials! Like the huge wind turbines that are being used around the country, which are advanced versions of windmills, you can achieve the same outcome for your home on a smaller scale to generate electricity. It is all about harnessing the energy of the wind to generate power. To begin, you should first make some calculations. Find out the average wind speed and wind direction in your area. This will determine the individual aspects of your windmill design.

The main goal of your windmill design is to match the speed and force generated by the rotor blades with the force needed for the cranking of the generator. The best way to achieve this is in the design of the blades. Longer blades mean more power generation, and more electricity. Longer blades or more blades also mean slower blade rotation. Tip speed ratio is also important to consider when designing your blades. When you build your own windmill, blades can be made of plastic or wood. PVC plastic sewer pipe is an excellent material that withstands strong winds.

Once you have designed your blades, find a generator. You may purchase one, or build your own. Some that may work with a few adjustments are old electric treadmill motors, car alternators, washing machine motors or car disc brakes that have been converted into permanent magnet motors. Your windmill generator will need to be mounted in a weatherproof container. After you have accomplished all of the necessary requirements to build your own windmill, which are not all covered here, you will need to mount it.

You may want to mount it on your roof or on a tower stand on its own. It just depends on the best location. It could be a real DIY Energy Savings

Question by hptn: How can an car alternator be used as a wind generator?

I am talking about an electric car alternator, an electric alternator needs a current first to generate magnet, then the rotating magnet generates electricity. In the wind power case, at the beginning, there is no electricity to generate magnet, how to make electricity?
Thanks.

Answer by G33K
An alternator is already a generator (i do believe it is a DC current, since that’s what a car’s battery runs on). All you need to do is mount it higher, remove the wheel that the belt goes onto, and connect the alternator to a voltage regulator and a battery. If you want to connect it to your house to help ease your electric bill, you need an AC power inverter. Here are a few helpful pages:

I know that you’re worrying about the rising cost of all the energy prices, this is happening across the world. But did you know you can make this impact lessen on you and your bank account? They make a home build wind generator which is using alternative energy source to produce electrical power for their house.

Everyone all over the world are making wind generators at home to lessen their power bills, and once you do make your own you will be saving our planet as well. Click here to learn how to make home built wind generators to lower your electric bill each month.

So just what wind generator to start with? A wind generator is simply a device, most often than not it’ll be a wind turbine that uses the power of the blowing wind to make kinetic energy with the spinning rotor blades. Those blades are then connected to the generator.

Then the generator makes use of something that is called electromagnetic, all of this means is that there will be magnets that are spinning around a conductor. The spinning of the magnets round the conductor will turn the kinetic energy into electricity. After the electric power is generated it’ll either charge up a group of electric batteries that you have for storage or it will be connected directly to the power grid.

Now this is an important concept that you need to keep in mind, wind turbines make power by using thin air. What this means is that the wind turbines must be larger compared to the power that it will be able to generate. The best location for a home built wind turbine to be set up it where you have constant blowing wind, as you should know by now that if the wind blades are not spinning you’ll not be producing any electrical energy for your house. The length of the blades will be 5 meters (16 feet) from tip to tip in length.

Don’t be concerned you are able to construct more compact ones that will generate electric power for your home. So that wind generator that has blade of 5 meters (16 feet) will usually be able to produce 500 kWh of electricity per year.

So the average home makes use of about 4500 kWh annually of electricity, so if you do the math you will be making a savings, and if you want to save more all you truly have to do is construct more wind generators. Wind Turbine Blades: The Right Blades for your Wind Turbine

Article by June Campbell

Anyone in the process of installing a wind turbine system to generate home wind power must understand certain facts about wind turbine blades.

First, they are among the key and critical mechanisms of any wind turbine. They are the first tie between our power source – the wind and the end result. The end result, of course, is the home generated electricity that we intend to utilize to operate our sundry electrical equipment and appliances.

How Do Wind Turbine Blades Operate?

It may help to liken a wind turbine blade to the sails on a sailboat. Both sails and blades experience the force of moving air currents.

In a wind turbine, the blades are attached to a shaft that moves without restraint. This force evolves into a rotary movement. A typical wind turbine has at least three blades and often more. All blades move in unison to create an ongoing rotation. The rotation ceases when the wind speed reduces to a point where it can no longer push the blades.

The wind turbine has a generator which converts this rotary motion into an electrical current. A generator is a motor that is running backwards, or in reverse. DIYers who build their own system often find that used motors in good condition are adequate for this task.

The turbine’s blades are engineered with a distinct aerodynamic quality designed to extract the utmost amount of energy from the wind, whatever the wind’s speed may be at any given point. Much research and development is underway as manufacturers strive to build increasingly effective blades for the wind turbines.

Blades are available in various designs and configurations. The blades are chosen in consideration with the user’s specific location and the final desired outcome.

Making Your Own Wind Turbine Blades

It is a simple enough task to make your own wind turbine for home use. It’s also remarkably economical. With some ordinary tools and a few used materials, you can build your system for approximately two hundred dollars.

Turbine blades are available in an array of materials. You can find blades made of plastic, metal and even certain species of wood. If you are fabricating your own blades from raw materials then you can easily manufacture an exceedingly effective blade shape with a few raw materials and a good basic plan.

Fabricating is one approach, but many choose the simpler route of simply cutting the blades from a length of pipe. This can be accomplished easily by cutting a section of PV pipe lengthwise into four even sections. With this method, you have three blades to use and an extra one to store for a later date. It is good to have an extra on hand, since wind turbine blades sometimes break or get damaged.

Once your pipe is cut into quarters, you can turn each piece into a blade by performing a few cuts with a jigsaw. You are wise to sand the edges to reduce sound and increase efficiency.

A home made wind turbine blade will be less efficient than its commercially produced counterpart. Nevertheless, these PV blades are sufficient for residential use and are capable of generating a decent amount of electricity.

You may want to start by getting a good set of wind turbine plans. Green Power Easy is among the most popular of these plans that are available for download on the Internet.

Planning a Site Assessment for a Residential Wind Turbine

Article by Brent Crouch

For those considering investing in a residential wind power system, one of the most important factors is the wind velocity of the area. Information about wind speed, strength, and frequency can vary, as the methods for measuring wind data are still controversial. One of the methods recommended is to measure the wind data on your property for a year, using a “wind resource evaluation system”.

Using this system, you’ll measure wind speed over time with an anemometer mounted on a pole outside. The machine collects wind data and sends it to the computer, where annual wind velocity can then be determined. The anemometer and accompanying equipment costs between 0-,000, depending on the quality and sophistication of the kit.

Many homeowners may not wish to spend thousands of dollars and a year of their time meticulously measuring wind speeds on their property. However, a wind turbine only generates electricity efficiently at wind speeds higher than 10 mph, and energy savings can only be realized when the system is working efficiently. As wind energy systems cost ,000-,000, a homeowner should be sure they’ll realize energy savings before making such a large initial investment.

Residential wind turbines need back-up power for those times when the wind isn’t blowing, and most systems use the utility grid as their back-up. Because homeowners will still be drawing electricity from the grid and paying electric bills, they should look at how much energy savings they are willing to accept for their investment.

-A tower turbine can reduce household utilities by 50 – 90%. Is 50% enough savings for the initial cost of the wind system? Or will the savings have to be closer to 90% in order to make the upfront investment?

-Utility electricity can sometimes be cheaper than wind energy. If electricity costs less than $ .10/kWh, there’s no way a turbine can compete. While in many areas of the nation, electricity costs much more than $ .10/kWh, there may be areas where low electricity costs prevent wind systems from creating energy savings.

-If the wind velocity on your property is lower than 10 mph, a tower turbine isn’t efficient enough to create much energy savings. A roof mounted turbine can create energy savings of 10%. Would this be enough savings?

There are other factors that affect the efficiency of a wind turbine. A property of at least one acre, with exposed high ground unobstructed by buildings or trees is best for you, and installing the turbine at least 250 feet of space is best for your neighbors. Your property will need sufficient space to accommodate an 85-150 foot tower surrounded by guide wires.

Wind generally blows in a pattern, which can be affected by the location, surrounding obstacles, and seasons. Learning the wind signature of your turbine site will provide queues as to when to expect heavy winds. Winter and spring are generally good times of year for high wind velocity, while summer is a time of low wind velocity. Afternoons are usually peak times for wind speeds.

Wind velocity can be calculated using wind maps and climate data from local weather agencies. However, these calculations are only estimates. For more precise information, a wind assessor, either hired by you or provided by a wind turbine company, should come out to the property for an inspection.

Due to the many factors which form a wind signature, like obstacles and elevation, the homeowner should have wind data assessed on the exact spot where the turbine will be built. This is the area which matters most to the efficiency of a wind energy system.

A wind assessor should take measurements on a “normal” day, not a day when a storm is approaching. Storms or unusually high winds could skew the wind data higher than normal. The assessor will measure wind speed from the ground first, and then from various heights up to the height of the tower. Distance from the ground can affect wind speed a lot, so a variety of readings is helpful for accuracy.

There is nothing more important to a residential wind system than a good wind assessment. Securing an accurate wind velocity is a crucial step for anyone interested in making an investment in a wind turbine.

Treadmill motor wind generator turbine DC gear up belt drive Montana

This is my second wind generator made from a treadmill motor this time geared up 3.6:1. Many of the parts were recycled from the same exercise machine with the exception of 3″ exhaust clamps, angle iron, nylon reinforced vacuum belt and some hardware and other incidentals. The spindle assembly fits the standard mounting bracket of the motor and is both adjustable (belt tension) and bearing supported. I de-toothed a saw blade for the hub and drilled it out with a precision collet index. The other parts were either bored out or turned down with a tool room lathe. I took the motor all apart and it looked hardly used (most are), and cleaned up the commutator for good measure anyway. The frame itself is mig welded steel. In the video you can see amps first then volts, around 4.5 and 22 respectively but the multimeter was acting up a little so not sure about accuracy. The Subaru headlight bulb is running one filament. Blades are thin gauge steel and almost 60″ diameter and will start up the machine even when motor is shorted with very little wind. Will probably go with a deeper gear ratio and thinner tipped blades on the next one. Thanks for looking

Question by WindTurbines.net: What is the most durable and quality BRAND of wind turbines?

Most brands of wind turbines are named after their manufacturers. What brand do you think is the most durable among them all?

Best answer:

Answer by Lorenzo
The market (usually) answers that question, and the market in the US answers that the most durable and quality turbine is made and manufactured by General Electric. Their GE 1.5 MW turbine has sold more than 12,000 units since its introduction in 1999. The GE turbine was originally designed by a German company (Tacke) that went bankrupt, sold to an American company (Zond) which had built smaller (read that unprofitable) turbines. Zond was sold to Enron (American) when Enron went bankrupt the assets of Enron wind were traded to GE for the debts that Enron owed GE. This 1.5 MW turbine originally designed by Tacke became the first turbine that didn’t need government subsidies to work. At 1.5 megawatts of power, and with blades over 100′ long, the turbine made money for its investors.

Other major manufacturers are Mitsubishi (Japan); Gamesa (Spain); Vestas (Denmark); Clipper (US); Suzlon (India); and GoldWind (China).

But, again, in specific answer to your question, I like GE best. (Their 2.5 MW on-shore product is the best I’ve worked on, in, and around.) All the components–towers, blades, nacelles–of a GE turbine are built in the US (except, interestingly, the actual electric generator.)

In the 100 years or so since wind turbines were first used to produce electricity, they have seen many alterations, resulting in more effective and versatile units. Despite being superior in every measurable way, they’re also now more affordable than ever. Wind turbines generally fall into a few basic categories, each of which is intended to serve a specific purpose and will likely be more or less appropriate depending on the potential buyer’s needs.

Since they were introduced around 1930, large-scale commercial wind generators have improved in a number of ways. Enhanced blade design, more durable materials, and more efficient and reliable performance are some of the areas in which they’ve gotten better. In order to handle high winds consistently and thus generate a large amount of energy, these turbines are usually made from super-heavy duty materials.

As the strongest and most relentless winds are mostly in remote areas like shorelines, large-model wind turbines usually need to be located in these areas. Being “out of the way” like this means that it would be expensive to have to repair them all the time, so it’s a must that these units are especially reliable. Large-scale turbines often exceed 0,000 in price, which is due in large part to these factors.

Wind turbines for use in a residential environment are essentially scaled-down versions of those larger, commercial units. The most common problem encountered by the first generation of wind turbines for residential use was that they weren’t able to easily adjust to shifting wind patterns, which are especially common amid the buildings and other obstacles that are typical of residential settings.

Weight was also a problem for the first generation of residential-use wind turbines. It would usually be necessary to have a strong, purpose-built tower to support them. Ultimately, the drawbacks and costs were usually too much for many homeowners to really consider.

Micro turbines, the latest phase in the evolution of residential-use wind turbines, rectify the problems that plagued earlier versions. The main improvement with these turbines is their capacity to produce power from lower winds, which allows them to be used even without being mounted on towers. In some instances, it’s even possible to set up a micro turbine directly on your roof. These compact turbines are turning at all times, and this makes up for the fact that they don’t have the maximum power generating capacity of some of the larger models. With a price range of about 0 to ,000, these micro turbines are also relatively inexpensive and are well within the area in which the electrical bill savings they provide will almost immediately justify the investment

Wind turbines vary significantly in terms of their size and power, and the price tends to vary accordingly as well. By building a wind turbine yourself, you can bring the cost down even more. All you need are some common tools and the right instructions, and just about anyone can build a wind turbine, and get the lifelong savings that come with it.
